George Michael slams EastEnders Gay Storyline

"Gay people deserve better than the BBC's pathetic attempts to 'represent' us"-George Michael slams EastEnders.

George Michael has heavily criticised the storyline between two gay character in the British soap opera EastEnders. The 48-year-old musician, who came out publicly in 1998, branded the storylines involving characters Syed Masood and Christian Clarke “insulting” and accused the TV show of scaring children who were struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.

“It’s official. George Michael has had enough of EastEnders. ARE THEY F***ING KIDDING! Insulting to the gay community, insulting to the Muslim community and, in the meantime, terrifying every gay child that is struggling to come to terms with their sexuality and the prospect of coming out to their family, whatever their religion.”-the singer tweeted.

In EastEnders, Syed, played by actor Marc Elliott, is torn between his Muslim faith and his true feelings for Christian, played by John Partridge, who is openly gay in real life and recently married his long-time boyfriend Jon Tsouras in a civil partnership.

“They are scaring the s*** out of children everywhere for the sake of drama and it doesn’t seem to have occurred to them.”think that soaps are hugely influential in modern Britain. They should reflect sexuality in just the same terms that they reflect race and integration. Positively. And without stereotypes. In this respect they are failing us all. Spectacularly.”-George Michael slammed BBC1 EastEnders.

The former Wham! star, however, added that his frustrations were not aimed at either Partridge or Elliott, who he said “have done brilliantly as actors regardless of the storyline.
