Boy George suffered Homophobic Abuse in Jail

Boy George remembers the homophobic abuse in jail, two years ago

Eghties pop sensation Boy George suffered homophobic abuse during his four-month spell behind bars in 2009.

The Culture Club star was sentenced to four months in prison after being found guilty of falsely imprisoning a male escort, who he also beat with a metal chain.

The ‘Karma Chameleon‘ singer admitted to initially being terrified of fellow convicts and their homophobic insults, but gradually began to adjust to prison life.

“When you first arrive, it’s terrifying, I don’t care how hard you are. But eventually you just go, ‘You know what? I’m here!’ Acceptance is a huge thing.”-singer Boy George recalls the homophobic abuse in jail.

“[The bullying] was mainly young guys shouting out ‘batty boy’ and things like that. It was nothing I hadn’t heard before and I dealt with it in the way I would on the street. Telling me I’m gay is not news to me. Why are you telling me I’m gay? Yeah, I know, I’m 50.”–Boy George adds.

The singer, who spent rough time in jail, said in a June interview that his life has been a “spectacular disaster“ at times.
